HIGHGATE

Highgate was once part of the Forest of Middlesex. The Romans came and left evidence of their stay in the form of coins found in Highgate.Woodland and its wild creatures flourished and became, as elsewhere, a feudal domain, in this case a manor of the Bishop of London. His hunting park embraced a large part of modern Highgate and Finchley.Around this Highgate plateau people with business at Court or in the city acquired land and built themselves country houses. Aristocrats and merchants, Lord Mayors among them, were attracted not only by good communications with London, but by the clear air and spectacular views. By Tudor times, Highgate straddled the newer main road to the north, via Holloway and Highgate Hill, and it became one of the principal stageing posts for coaches.After the civil war, with great changes in land ownership, Highgate developed as a country village with terraces of houses and shops for professional men and trades people. Writers, academics, politicians, actors and business people made and still make their home here. Many eighteenth-century buildings and a few earlier ones remain in Highgate.

Highgate Cemetery was founded 1839 as one of seven cemeteries instituted by Parliament in 1839, round that time to replace the over-full London churchyards
At first resented by Highgate residents it became a source of pride,with its impressive tombs and garden vistas.The romantic wilderness came only after the Second World War. Here are buried Michael Faraday,Christina Rossetti, George Elliot, Karl Marx, Sir Ralph Richardson, and many more famous people including the family of Charles Dickens,Dickens himself is interred in Westminster Abbey. Also the remains of William Henry Monk Who wrote the hymn Abide with me are also buried.

WATERLOW PARK

Next door to my apartment is Waterlow Park which was donated to the people of London, by Sir Sydney Waterlow in 1889. It had been part of his own private estate .When it was opened to the public in October 1891 he himself addressed the assembled crowd. It became immediately popular. On Whit Monday 1893, for instance, 50,000 people visited Waterlow Park. There are three lakes in Waterlow Park with an abundance of wildlife. HAMPSTEAD

Hampstead Heath is just around the corner. Despite the urban sprawl that has engulfed them, Hampstead and Highgate are both still very much villages, each with their own character, history and celebrities. They're seperated by Hampstead Heath, 800 acres of wonderful wild parkland.Hampstead is possibly one of the most beautiful parks in London; Hampstead Heath is full of sports facilities.The park is vast,hilly and,in parts,covered in woodland.Its perfect for jogging. There are many lakes and a open air swimming pool. Most passers-by climb to the top of Parliment Hill (319ft) to admire the spectacular view of London and to watch the kite-flyers practising their loops and dives.

Abu Ben Adam, may his tribe increase
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace
And saw, within the moonlight of his room

Exceeding peace had made Abu Ben Adam bold.

'What writest thou?' The vision raised it's head.

'And is mine one?' said Abu. 'Nay not so,'
Replied the angel. Abu spoke more low.
But cheerily still and said, 'I pray thee then
Write me as one that loves his fellow men.'
The angel wrote and vanished.
The next night it came again with awakening light
And showed the names of whom the God of love had blessed.
And , lo! Abu Ben Adam's name led all the rest
